Native Cuban Food
The country eats plenty of seafood due to its location on the ocean! The people also love rice and plantains, the favorite way of cooking being tostones, or twice fried plantains. Beef is considered “perdido” in Cuba, meaning that it is almost nonexistent in the country.
Cuban cuisine is largely based on Spanish cuisine with influence from African and other Caribbean cuisines. Some Cuban recipes share spices and techniques with Spanish, African and Taino cooking, with some Caribbean influence in spice and flavor. This results in a blend of several different cultural influences.
Cuba prohibits the import of all meat products and fruit. If you arrive in Cuba with any meat or fruit, it will be confiscated and destroyed. Avoid military zones and other restricted areas. Be particularly careful when taking photographs or videos in these areas, which are not always clearly signposted.
